March is…moving on up

 march-is

Where to begin? I guess this month has already started actually.

2008 marked the launch of Earth Hour – sixty minutes of no electricity in honour of the earth. We suspect it started out as a collective statement to support actions to address climate change. In reality, what many found, was the practice of conserving resources is in fact pretty darn easy. At the iNSPiRED PRACTiCE household and office, we shut down all electricity for the entire day. It simply wasn’t needed. Candlelight worked back in the pre-industrial era and amazingly enough works just as well today. For some parts of the day, activities and meals were focused around energy-free sources. During the latter part of the day, we opted to use battery-powered devices like laptops and iPods for entertainment. If we could apply this behaviour change to more than one hour on one day every year, we could be light years ahead. This year, Earth Hour takes place at 8:30pm EST on Saturday, March 28.

WIN-WIN-WIN. The Workplace Integration of Newcomers Pilot Project is back again for Phase II. iNSPiRED PRACTiCE is developing a Phase II framework and proposal on behalf of Options for Success Inc. The new phase includes a unique coordination of various provincial branches to support the WIN participant\’s path to closing their skills gap and a look at up to 8 new occupations.

iNSPiRED PRACTiCE is over the moon to be working with Taking IT Global (TIG) this month. TIG is an organization founded by our friends – Jennifer Corriero and Michael Furdyk – with an aim to empower youth internationally to build a better world. Sounds like something we’d be into, right? You BET! We will be doing a little strategic work with them around financial sustainability – an increasingly important issue in this recessionary economy.

At the tail-end of February, the Children’s Health & Environment Partnership of Manitoba hosted two workshops developed and delivered by the Canadian Partnership for Children’s Health and the Environment (CPCHE). The Playing It Safe workshops, as they are called, have set in motion a wonderful series of new relationships and ideas around how to protect children’s environmental health in Manitoba. So…March is dedicated to following up on this newly generated will and ingenuity.
