The Plastics

mean-girls

No we’re not talking about the in-crowd in Mean Girls. We are talking about the material that has made its way into our fridges, bathrooms, eating utensils, kids toys, and practically everything else human beings consume (that is, buy). Trust us – you want to know The Plastics. Not all Plastics are made equally and some are COOLER than others. One of iNSPiRED PRACTiCE’s clients, The Children’s Health & Environment Partnership of Manitoba, has developed a guide to safer plastics for parents and service providers. We have adapted content from the Institute for Agriculture & Food Policy’s Smart Plastics Guide in a plain-language and concise format.

The general rule is #1, 2, 4 & 5 are safer plastics and #3, 6 & 7 should be avoided – especially in storing food and beverages or eating directly from them. Choose less plastic when it comes to anything children have contact with. This could be everything from teethers to baby bottles. If plastic is chosen, choose #5 for baby bottles. Never cook or heat food or drink in plastic containers.
